Learning and Emotion Study

Purpose of study: This is a 2-day study that explores associative learning and emotion testing.

Name of experimenter: Meghan Whalen, B.S.

Study location: Psychology Building, 490 Boston Ave, 3rd Floor, Medford

Specific requirements: 18-50 years old, healthy, normal or corrected vision, fluent in English. No psychiatric, endocrine, or neurological disorders, no medications (other than oral contraceptives and acetaminophen), no medical devices, must not be pregnant, must not have participated in studies involving shock within the last 6 months. At the time of your visit you must not be using drugs or alcohol or have consumed caffeine up to 2 hours prior to the visit.

Type of activity: You will view stimuli on a screen and receive mild electrical shocks on your wrist. You will also complete an emotion-related test. We will make non-invasive recordings of your skin conductance and you will fill out several questionnaires.

Approximate length of time: This is a 2-day study. The sessions will occur on two consecutive days, around the same time each day. Each day will last 1-1.5 hours.

Payment: You will get 1 SONA credit per hour of participation (up to 3 credits total). Or alternatively, you will be paid $20/hour of participation (up to $60 total). You may opt for partial credit hours and partial payment at the rate of $20/hour.

Associative Learning and Virtual Reality Study

Purpose of study: This is a 3-day study that explores associative learning and virtual reality.

Name of experimenter: Xandra Kredlow, Ph.D.

Study location: Psychology Building, 490 Boston Ave, 3rd Floor, Medford

Specific requirements: 18-50 years old, healthy, normal or corrected vision (contacts ok but no glasses), fluent in English. No psychiatric, endocrine, or neurological disorders, no medications (other than oral contraceptives and acetaminophen), no seizures or heart conditions, no medical devices, must not be pregnant, must not have participated in studies involving shock within the last 6 months, must not have ever used virtual reality. At the time of your visit you must not be using drugs or alcohol, hungover, or sleep deprived, or have a cold, flu, headache, migraine, earache, digestive problem, or contagious condition. Participation on days 2-3 is contingent upon responses on day 1.

Type of activity: You will view stimuli on a screen and receive mild electrical shocks on your wrist. You may also complete a brief virtual reality task. We will make non-invasive recordings of your skin conductance and pupil dilation and you will fill out several questionnaires.

Approximate length of time: This is a 3-day study. The three sessions will occur on three consecutive days, at the same time each day. Each day will last 45-75 minutes.

Payment: You will be paid $20/hour, plus a bonus of $10 if you complete all visits, for a potential total of $80.
